Well the results are in and it appears that an overwhelming majority of couponers agree: Selling your stockpile is wrong. There has been a great deal of dialogue over this subject and I have read a number of different views.
Things to consider:
- While selling your stockpile (which we do not encourage or do) at a garage sale is perfectly legal, once a product is sold it is yours to do with as you please, there are other considerations.
- State laws vary, for instance, in MS there is a law on the books that prevents the sale of items by someone other than a business (I looked it up one time, but do not have the reference available - will try to link later).
- Selling on an on-going basis may require a business permit if it occurs week-in and week-out.
- Depending on the volume of sales you make at a garage sale, consider the income you are making. While selling stuff at a garage sale typically nets you a couple bucks for an ice cream, operating a garage sale as a going concern week in and week out could net you much more - and if not declared as income, may bring an unwelcome visit by the taxman.
While all the above considerations are plausible, they are not intended for anything other than stirring conversation and understanding the implications of selling items you received for free or a discounted price through couponing.
We feel the more responsible thing, especially in this economy and amidst the recent natural disasters, is to share. Remember it comes back to you 10-fold! Or, if you are more like us, only buy what you need to live while realizing savings.
